Sunnyvale, Calif. Maxim Integrated Products has introduced a multi-chemistry battery charger IC that integrates dual Quick-PWM step-down controllers to deliver a compact power solution for notebooks, UMPCs, MIDs, and other portable applications. The MAX17085B is touted as an all-in-one power solution that supplies main/system power and battery charging.
The battery charger’s switching frequency is rated for operation up to 1.2 MHz to allow for the use of smaller inductors. Dual SMPSs with dual keep-alive linear regulators supply system power in the off, standby, and alive states. With this high level of integration, the MAX17085B is well suited for portable applications where space and component cost are critical.
The charge-voltage setting is adjustable and accurate to +/-0.4%. The charge current is also adjustable by an analog or PWM input. Internal 5V/100mA and 3.3V/50mA LDOs generate always-on power supplies. The device also integrates overvoltage, undervoltage, thermal, and other fault-protection features.
The MAX17085B is available in a 5 x 5 mm, 40-pin TQFN package with an exposed pad. It is fully specified over the -40°C to +105°C temperature range.
Pricing: Starts at $2.45 (1000-up, FOB USA). An evaluation kit with recommended external components is available to reduce design time.
