3M has introduced an Ultra Hard Metric (UHM) socket that can deliver backplane speeds in excess of 7Gbps in systems based on 2mm hard metric connectors. Available from franchised distributor Toby Electronics, the new parts offer the opportunity to enhance the performance of technologies such as VME and CompactPCI, whilst maintaining PCB footprint compatibility and intermateability.
The new socket features patented virtual coax box shielding that dramatically reduces the crosstalk commonly experienced by 2mm hard metric connectors operating at 1 1.5Gbps. Crucially, the UHM socket connector is designed to mate with 2mm hard metric IEC 61076-4-101 headers and is fully compatible with 2mm hard metric PCB footprints. As a result, standard Compact PCI and VME 64x systems can support multi-gigabit, high speed serial IO protocols such as SAS, SATA, Rapid IO, PCI Express and Gigabit Ethernet, without costly redesigns or upgrades.
For high signal density, five row and eight row form factors are available. In addition, the socket supports 100 Ohm differential pairs in rows and columns.
