Maximize light load efficiency

Starting May 2025, most appliances sold in the EU will need to consume less than 300mW in standby, a notable decrease from the current 500mW limit. To help meet these standards, a new application note from PI (AN-109) serves as a comprehensive guide for small open-frame power supplies. This guide utilizes Power Integrations’ LinkSwitch-XT2SR non-isolated flyback switcher ICs, which boast efficiencies of up to 90 per cent and a no-load consumption below 5mW.

LinkSwitch-XT2SR ICs provide up to 250mW to the load within the 300mW allowance, enabling more system functionality to operate in standby mode for small appliances, IoT-enabled home and building automation applications such as smart locks, sensor-based environmental controls and various industrial applications.

The ICs also reduce component count by integrating a synchronous rectifier driver and auxiliary, low-current, μVcc output for directly powering an MCU. The product family offers a 725V internal power MOSFET switch for universal input voltage and a 900V-rated option for an increased safety margin.
