Compact, efficient flyback designs for 800 V EVs

Eight hundred volt EV battery architectures, which allow for longer range and faster charging, are no longer limited to buses and trucks. They are gaining momentum in the passenger car market. Power Integrations’ AEC-Q100 qualified InnoSwitch3-AQ flyback switcher IC family includes 1700 V-rated members with a silicon carbide primary switching MOSFET, enabling sensitive control circuits to safely draw power from an 800 V battery.

A new design example report (DER-952Q) highlights the high level of integration achieved by these ICs. This compact, low-profile power supply can deliver the full 86
W output power at 85°C ambient temperature from a 300 to 900 VDC input range. The heatsink-free design is more than 92 per cent efficient and uses only 62 components. The 13.5 V output configuration lets the design replace a vehicle’s 12 V auxiliary battery.

InnoSwitch3-AQ ICs use a FluxLink feedback link, providing reinforced isolation up to 5000 VRMS for secondary-side control. FluxLink technology enables direct sensing of the output voltage, offering benefits such as accurate regulation and extremely fast transient response. Additional protection features include input under-voltage, output over-voltage, and over-current limiting.
