Mitigate the risk of counterfeit components: three key strategies

Counterfeiting has become a growing concern in the electronics industry, especially during times of supply chain disruption when companies may run into difficulty sourcing the parts they need. However, there are steps that can be taken to mitigate the risk.

Rigorous sourcing and traceability:

A first line of defense against counterfeit products is sourcing exclusively from original component manufacturers (OCMs) or their authorized distributors. This approach ensures that every component comes with a verifiable chain of custody. Each product is tracked with detailed documentation, including date codes, lotcodes, and other identifiers provided by the OCM or distributor. This traceability provides assurance that components meet the expected standards and specifications.

When a customer requests procurement from non-standard suppliers, Avnet requires a signed waiver acknowledging the increased risk and verifying their consent. This practice allows flexibility while maintaining transparency about the origin and quality of the parts. The goal is to mitigate risks by setting strict criteria for every supplier in Avnet’s network.

Stringent inspection and return policies:

To further protect against counterfeit infiltration, Avnet implements robust inspection and return processes. When products are shipped, they are accompanied by certificates of conformance (CFCs) either from the manufacturer or Avnet’s own records. These documents confirm the origin and specifications of each component, ensuring that traceability is preserved throughout the supply chain.

In the event of a return, Avnet’s return material authorization (RMA) process provides additional safeguards. Returned products are inspected for conformity to the original purchase documentation and packaging requirements. If the material fails validation, it is quarantined and permanently removed from inventory to prevent it from re-entering the supply chain. Verified products, when returned, are labeled as RMA material and reserved for customers who allow such inventory as part of their contracts.

This careful review process ensures that only authentic, verified components are made available for reuse, providing additional layers of protection for customers who depend on high-quality materials.

Advanced risk mitigation practices:

Avnet’s counterfeit risk mitigation program is guided by industry standards, such as AS6496, and supported by an internal policy statement detailing the processes. This program extends beyond sourcing and inspection to include regular internal audits that ensure compliance with these rigorous standards.

Additionally, Avnet recognizes the importance of advanced testing methodologies, such as x-ray and electrical testing, to confirm product authenticity in high-risk scenarios. These advanced techniques are particularly valuable for hard-to-source components acquired outside standard supply channels.

By prioritizing trusted sourcing, robust verification and adherence to best practices, Avnet helps reduce the risks associated with counterfeit components. These measures not only protect customers but also emphasize the value of working with partners who uphold the highest standards of quality and reliability.
