Light: quality matters

With the UK’s focus on high value manufacturing, MARL’s investment in quality has won it business in Esectors ranging from rail and military to film and stage.

Established in Ulverston in 1973, Marl International has been at the forefront of LED technology for over 50-years. Over the decades, the company has progressed as the technology became bright and efficient enough to expand from simple indication to general lighting.

With the commoditisation of general LED lighting the market became flooded with low-cost products mass-manufactured overseas. Whilst considered ‘good enough’ for many, there are some markets that demand more exacting quality of light and quality of manufacture. Like many British manufacturers, Marl prides itself on quality and stepped up to these challenges.

In recent years Marl has seen success in the marine and defence lighting markets, thanks to its ability to work to exacting requirements and military standards and keep consistent communication with the customer throughout a project, while delivering ruggedised lighting that can provably withstand harsh environments and requires little to no maintenance.

Other specialist markets where Marl has flourished include: transportation thanks to a long history in the rail industry; and film/stage lighting which requires a particular quality of light (High Colour Rendering Index) that makes the subject’s colours show more accurately and vibrantly.

Marl recently upgraded its toolroom and design facilities. A new Hurco VM20i vertical machining centre was delivered in January to double its machining capability, meet schedule requirements and support rapid design and development. A new darkroom was built in 2023, featuring a high precision rotation luminaire gonio-spectroradiometer for measurement of luminous flux, production of IES files and detailed reporting. This enables in-house testing and a quicker turnaround.
